Since 1993, the Royal Australian Mint has released the annual Kangaroo Series to commemorate Australia’s most iconic animal. Continuing with this tradition, the first release in the new theme of Seasons Change depicts an adult female Eastern Grey Kangaroo and her offspring on the inland plane of Australia, her preferred habitat. The reverse of this coin depicts a mother kangaroo and its offspring in the pouch of its mother. A baby kangaroo stays in the pouch of a minimum of twelve months while it develops and feeds from the teat of its mother. After twelve months, the baby kangaroo becomes too big to remain in the pouch and leaves its safety to explore its new world freely.
The Eastern Grey Kangaroo can be found across the inland plane and coastal landscape of Australia. The reverse design features a winter inland plane with gum trees and mountain ranges.
