Details
At a time of considerable change, which saw the retirement of the longest serving prime minister, the changeover in currency fom pounds, shillings and pence to a new decimal format of dollars and cents brought with in one of most popular coins in Australian numismatics.
The highest denomination coin at the commencment of decimal currency, the 1966 round 50c piece rapidly become sought after and controversial.
The 1966 50c piece was instantly controversial due to it's shape. Circular just like the 20c and with no great differencne in size, the two coins were easily confused and the complaints came in. Despite this, the coin soon became notorious as silver prices rose suddenly- resulting in the intrinsic silver value far out stripping the face value. Hence, the coins ceased being minted and the remainder was either hoarded by the general public or melted down for profit.
