DETAILS

The Royal Australian Mint was established by the Commonwealth of Australia in 1965 in anticipation of the conversion to decimal currency in 1966. It is housed in an imposing building set in sweeping, open grounds in Deakin, Canberra.

Over the years the Mint has grown to become one of Canberra's most popular seven-day-a-week tourist attractions. Visitors to Australia's national capital can see the country's coins being minted along with an extraordinary display of ancient and modern coins and interesting films. Entry is free, and coins and collectables can be purchased at the Mint shop.

The proof coins in this set reflect the ultimate in Mint craftmanship. They are struck from hand-polished dies, using specially prepared blanks with a smooth, bright surface. The resultant coin is a masterpiece of flawless beauty with the flat surface of the coin having a mirror-like surface while the rasied design is delicately frosted. Once minting is complete all dies are destroyed.

The United Narions has declared 1994 the International Year of the Family. In an effort to raise awareness of the good things about family life, the future families through our children and the diverse nature of the Australian family, the Royal Australian Mint held nation-wide competition to design a commemorative fifty cent coin. That coin, displaying the prize-winning design of Carilyn Rosser, is the feature of this 1994 Coin Set.

Please Note: These are second-hand collectables and may contain scratches, creases, marks, toning or other minor damage. Feel free to ask for photos before purchasing.
