The two dollar coin was first introduced on the 20th of June 1988, after the introduction of decimal currency in 1966 brought about the $2 banknote. The size of the two dollar coin was determined after consideration of the needs of the visually impaired community, security considerations, a desire to avoid shaped coins and practical limitations to the diameter and thickness of coins. Commemorative designs are often seen on $2 coins.
