The General Assembly of the Unitied Nations has declared 2008 the 'International Year of Planet Earth'.  Among the key areas for the 'International Year of Planet Earth' are aspects of climate change and water resources. Vladimir Gottwald chose images of groundwater and geological processes for the $1 coin design.
