The coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 2nd of June 1953, more than a year after her accession, captured the attention of the world in an unprecedented manner. In addition to the 8251 guests in attendance, an international audience of over twenty million watched the coronation ceremony on television. For many it was the first television program they ahd ever seen. The coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a Monarch who was cherished around the world, marked the commencement of a reign which had spanned six decades in 2013. 

The Royal Australian Mint marked this occasion with a special coloured coin, the design features a stylised representation of St Edward’s Crown surrounded by circles including a pattern of royal purple stripes.
