Details
Continuing the Royal Australian Mint’s tradition of commemorating important Australian sporting events, the 2013-14 Commonwealth Bank Ashes Series is commemorated with this 20c uncirculated coin. The Ashes Series represents one of the world’s greatest
and longest-standing cricket rivalries – that between Australia and England. Scheduled alternately in the northern and southern hemisphere, the Ashes tradition was born in 1882 when Australia defeated England on home soil for the first time. A mock obituary appeared in the press the next day stating that English cricket had died, and that “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” Hence the name of the enduring series was born.
