Details
Among the most resplendent insects to be found in Australia, the iridescent green, blue, and purple Cuckoo Wasp is truly befitting to be included in the Royal Australian Mint’s Bright Bugs Series. As cunning as it is beautiful, this parasitic wasp lays its eggs in the nest of a ‘host’ species, whose unlucky larvae provide a food source for the wasp’s young. When threatened by a rival, the cuckoo wasp can curl up into an almost impenetrable armoured ball. Launched in early 2014, the Mint’s Bright Bugs Series
features some of the continent’s most maligned and misunderstood; awe-spiring and eye-catching insects.
