Details

The Royal Australian navy (RAN) was created in 1911 to protect Australia's ports, shipping and trade routes. Under the command of Britain's Royal Navy, the RAN made a significant contribution early in World War One, when in November 1914, HMAS Sydney defeated the German raider Emden near the Cocos-Keeling ISlands in the Indian Ocean. It was Australia's first navel victory.
