Details
Animals carried out very important jobs during the war. Horses, camels, donkeys and mules transported soldiers, equipment, water and supplies. Pigeons carried long distance messages, and dogs were able to quickly deliver communications through trenches if wireless or telephone lines were cut. Today, dogs trained to detect explosives, drugs and people, remain in active service. Many military units used animals as their mascot and, as insignia on badges and flags.
