Description
The tradition of placing effigies of the reigning monarch on the obverse of coins dates back centuries.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the longest- reigning British monarch in 2015. Since her 1953 coronation, there have been six different effigies of the Queen on Australian coins. The previous effigies were designed by Mary Gillick (1953), Arnold Machin (1966), Raphael Maklouf (1985), lan Rank-Broadley (1998) and Vladimir Gottwald (2000). The sixth and most recent effigy, is based on a drawing by UK designer Jody Clark.
The Clark effigy depicts Her Majesty facing to the right as per tradition. She is shown wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem, which she wore for her coronation.
This coin, proudly produced by the Royal Australian Mint, marks the progression of the Queen's effigy on Australian coins.
