The signing of the Treaty of Versailles effectively ended the First World War. This moment also carried additional significance for Australia as a nation. As a signatory to the treaty, Australia was recognised as an independent nation under international law, and as a member of the League of Nations. This 2019 $1 Uncirculated Coin celebrates the centenary of this historic event.

The Treaty of Versailles established the peace after the First World War. Thirty-two nations signed the treaty on 29 June 1919, in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. Australia, alongside three other British Dominions was a signatory nation, marking a turning point in Australia's history.

As the first political treaty signed by Australian officials, with Australia involved in the negotiation of its terms, this marked us as an independent nation under international law. Australia was also established as a founding member of the new League of Nations, formed to implement the ideals of peace and democracy.

The Treaty of Versailles recognised a new status for Australia as a nation. The solemnity of this historic centenary is acknowledged in this 2019 $1 coin, featuring a design inspired by the 1919 Australian Peace Medal.
