Aussies are known for their good sense of humour, competitive streak and their love of a good bet and that’s exactly what led to the huge replica wheelbarrow in Port Hedland, Western Australia.

The Big Wheelbarrow is a nod to a bet between two miners in the 1960s that grew to be an annual wheelbarrow event and one of Port Hedland’s most successful fundraisers. The event ran for nearly 40 years and comprised of three activities, including pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with 11 kilograms of iron ore over 120 kilometres, jumping from a moving vehicle and a relay. While successful in raising more than $1 million for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and St John Ambulance, the event came to an end with the introduction of stricter safety rules and increased mining activity in the area.

The photogenic wheelbarrow stands out in the stark landscape, not only for its size, but its bright yellow paintjob. And while the quirky, if risky, wheelbarrow fundraiser has been condemned to history, The Big Wheelbarrow ensures it won’t ever be forgotten.
