DETAILS

The 6th Division of the Australian Imperial Force was among the Allied troops deployed to aid Greece in the face of its invasion by Nazi Germany in April 1941. After a series of defeats, the Allies were forced to withdraw south to the island of Crete. There, German forces mounted an enormous paratrooper operation. The Allies successfully thwarted many of the landings, but the Germans managed to capture key airfields, and Crete too had to be evacuated by the Allies. Despite the ultimate failure of the Allied defence, Australians forged ties with Greeks and Cretans that outlasted the war.
