Description

Throughout the Cold War, Australia fought a series of conflicts to contain the spread of communism in the Pacific region. In June 1950, North Korea invaded the South, capturing Seoul and advancing on Pusan. In response, the United Nations Security Council requested its members help stem the North Korean attack. Australian forces were already in Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force, and sent an Royal Australian Air Force squadron and an infantry battalion to South Korea to push the communist forces back across the 38th Parallel, while the Royal Australian Navy patrolled the South China Sea. Over the next three years, Australian troops fought actions at Kapyong and Maryang San and participated in the defence of the Samichon River until hostilities were suspended in July 1953.
