Description

Details

On the 25th of April 1809, an ex-convict named Isaac Nichols was appointed to be Australia's first postmaster, granted authority to collect incoming and outgoing mail between Sydney and overseas destinations. From his office run out of his home in George St, Sydney, Nichols took charge of the mail and put an end to people fraudulently obtaining letters and parcels from incoming ships.

According to Govenor Macquarie, Nichols was "a most zealous, active and useful man." Nichols continued as postmaster until his death in 1819, serving the community for adecade before his passing.
