Description

In 1606 a small, sleek Dutch ship called the Duyfken sailed through the Spice Islands in search of gold and trade oppotunities. There wa snone of the coveted gold or trade oppotunities, but what the crew found was even more significant - the coast of a huge continent they named "Groot Zuydtlandt" and which map makers soon called "Terra Australis Incognita" or "Unknown Southern Land" and which we now know as Australia.

Many regard this crew as the true European 'discoverers' of Australia, and in recent years the Duyfken's involvement in Australian history has been recognised in official history books.

2006 marks the 400th anniversary of the Duyfken's discovery of Australia, and the Royal Australian Mint continues it's proud tradition of honouring historic moments with the release of this $5 coin mint marked with the initials GZ (Groot Zuydtlandt).
