Decsription

Early on the morning of 8 August 1918, fire from thousands of British and French guns crashed down onto the German positions south of the Somme River. Australian and Canadian troops spearheaded the allied counteroffensive from postitions east of Villers-Bretonneux and gained over 24 kilometres of German-occupied territory. Allied forces captured 29,144 prisoners, 338 field guns and liberated 116 villages in a single day of fighting. Amiens was a significant allied victory that marked the beginning of the end of fighting on the Western Front. German General Erich Ludendorff called it "the black day of the German Army."
